What would you say to your 18-year-old self?

Have you ever gone somewhere or seen something that took you back in time? For just a moment, you can see, hear and feel an event from you past almost as if you were reliving it?

Recently, I accompanied my wife to the prom. It wasn’t our prom. It was the prom at the high school where she teaches. We usually go each year so she can help honor students who are about to graduate. The prom features a “Senoir Walk” where those students are recognized.

As I watched the students dancing just before we left I couldn’t help but think of my prom when I was a senior in high school. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really want to go, but everyone told me that if I didn’t go, I’d regret it. I still don’t know if that’s true, but I went.

I found myself wishing that I could go back in time and clue myself in on some truths that would have helped me throughout my life.

I’d tell myself that things are not as serious in life as I thought they were back then. I’d say that nobody really has their act together, even though it seems sometimes like everyone else but you has gotten life figured out. And, I’d make sure I knew that everything is going to turn out OK.

So what would you tell your 18-year-old self? Are those lessons still relevant for you today?
